Buena Vibra and La Fe Eastern are through the final of the US Open Women’s Polo Championship, the most prestigious ladies tournament in the United States, following the semifinals that were played on Thursday February 6, at the National Polo Center (NPC), in Wellington, Florida. The contest, that commenced on Tuesday January 28, sees six teams up to 22 goals (ladies handicap), partake. Teams are split in two brackets. It’s worth to note that the qualifying stage took place at Port Mayaca Polo Club.
The US Open Women’s Polo Championship dates back to the 1930s, in California; the first Woment’s US Open Tournament was presented by the United States Women’s Polo Association (USWPA) was held n 1937. The USWPA was the first polo association for women in the history of American polo, and created a women’s handicap system, mirroring that of the men. Women were officially admitted into the United States Polo Association (USPA), in the early 70s, most specifically in 1972, with women’s polo pioneer, Sue Sally Hale, becoming one of the first woman members. The current US Open Women’s Polo Championship resurfaced in the early 1990s, and was officialy recognized as a national tournament in 2011.
With regards to the semifinals, in the first contest, current title holders, Buena Vibra, bounced back in the last chukka to claim a 8-6 win against Mint Eco Car Wash, while La Fe Eastern Hay, with 10-goaler Hope Arellano within the lineup, had no trouble at all to defeat North Star Polo 9-7.
The National Polo Center will host the final of the US Open Women’s Polo Championship between Buena Vibra and La Fe Eastern Hay on Sunday February 9, at 3pm.
