The 2025 edition of The Gauntlet of Polo is due to begin on Saturday February 8, with the first leg of the series, the CV Whitney Cup. The Gauntlet of Polo, that will see teams up to 22 goals, partake, and, as well as the two remaining contests of the series – USPA Gold Cup and the US Open – it will be played entirely at the National Polo Center, in Wellington, Florida. Since its inception, back in 2019, the only team that claimed all three tournaments in one season, is Pilot, precisely on that first year.
Alongsite to Pilot, among the participating teams are Coca Cola, Park Place, Tamera, La Fe, Clearwater, and The Dutta Corp. In addition, there will be two significant comebacks to the big leagues – Scott Devon’s Catamount and Kelly Beal’s BTA, the latter with brand-new 10-goaler in US, Tomás Panelo, within the lineup. They will be joined by couple of new teams, Brookshire and Global Port. La Dolfina, the winners of the US Open in 2024, the year of Adolfo Cambiaso’s organisation debut in American high goal, will take part of the series under the name La Dolfina Tamera, joining forces with Alejandro Poma’s organisation. The Cambiasos, Adolfo and his son Poroto, will be split in two teams – La Dolfina Tamera and Catamount, respectively.
Originally known as the U.S. Handicap, the C.V. Whitney Cup was established in 1979, and first competed for on handicap in conjunction with the U.S. Open Polo Championship. In 1988, the tournament was renamed for C.V. (Cornelius Vanderbilt “Sonny”) Whitney, an avid polo player and three-time winner of the U.S. Open (1928, 1937, 1938) and son of 10-goal Hall of Famer Harry Payne Whitney. Inducted into the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame in 2022, Whitney left a lasting mark in polo. Rising to a 6-goal handicap during his playing career that spanned the “golden era” of polo, Whitney was a formidable factor in all major USPA tournaments.
The opening day of the CV Whitney Cup will have triple action:
11am: Brookshire vs. Dutta Corp
2pm: Clearwater vs. Pilot
3pm: La Dolfina Tamera vs. Coca Cola
The Gauntlet of Polo, that will kick off on Saturday February 8, will continue with the USPA Gold Cup, and will come to an end on April 20, with the much anticipated championship match of the US Open.
