Winning any of the tournaments that compose the Triple Crown in Argentina – Tortugas Open, Hurlingham Open and Argentine Polo Open Championhip – means to earn a place in history. But to be victorious in all three in one season, is a very significant achievement that only belong to a select group of five clubs – Coronel Suarez, Santa Ana, Ellerstina, La Aguada and La Dolfina.
Coronel Suarez and Santa Ana were the two first foursomes to claim the most coveted polo trophy in the world – the former, on four occasions (1972, 1874, 1975 and 1977), more than anyone else; and the latter only once, in 1973. Both Coronel Suarez and Santa Ana had a ground each bestowed upon them at the Argentine Association of Polo Headquarters, in Pilar – ground 1 is called Juan Carlos Harriott Jr./Coronel Suarez, and ground 2 is named after Francisco Dorignac/Santa Ana.
Now, the AAP, still under the presidency of Delfín Uranga, decided to pay the same tribute to the three remaining teams who won the Triple Crown – Ellerstina (1994 and 2010), La Aguada (2003) and La Dolfina (2013, 2014 and 2015).
Therefore, on Monday April 28, Pilar saw the three teams pleying some chukkas between them; and following the games, the AAP paid tribute to the three clubs, by naming ground 7, 9 and 11 La Aguada, La Dolfina and Ellerstina, respectively, in a legacy that will live forever in the history of polo.
