Action for the Justerini & Brooks Prince of Wales Trophy, the opening tournament of the high goal season in England, continued on Friday May 12, with a single match that saw Monterosso victorious over Black Bears by a narrow 9-8, in extra chukka. One of the most important competition of English polo, the contest is hosted by the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, and sees ten teams up to 22 goals, partake. Teams are split in two leagues.
Monterosso and Black Bears played a very tough and leveled match; Guy Schwarzenbach’s team took the lead halfway the first chukka, but Monterosso replied quickly to tie in the last minutes. From then onwards, both teams battled hard, although Alessandro Bazzoni & Co. managed to maintain a minimum advantage. Black Bears re-took the lead in the fifth chukka, but Monterosso remained on their tail. In the last seconds in regulation time, and when everything seemed to be said and done in favour of Black Bears, Pelón Stirling produced a fantastic goal to tie at 8-all to send the match into extra chukka; that’s when a foul is awarded to Monterosso, which ended in a 30 yards penalty, successfully converted by Cubi Toccalino, that secured Monterosso a tough 9-8 victory.
