Argentina defeated United States 6-2 to win the First Ladies World Cup on Saturday April 16, at Palermo.
The tournament marked a milestone in the history of the sport, and saw six national teams compete for the title: Argentina, Brazil, United States, England, Ireland, and Italy. Teams were split into two groups, with each group playing a round robin format, where the top team of each group faced off.
The Silver Cup went to England after their 6-5.5 victory over Italy (who received 0.5 goal on handicap). England got off to a better start, but Italy made a great comeback in the third chukka, when they closed the gap to be within half a goal of their opponents (3.5-4). However, luck was on England’s side and they took the Silver Cup home.
The following match saw Argentina and the United States play for the World Cup title. Argentina overwhelmed USA, displaying amazing team play. Despite Erica Gandomcar’s skills, there was not much the US could do. Argentina – led by 16-year-old Cata Lavinia, who scored a total of ten goals – performed at their best.
Brazil took the Bronze Cup after beating Ireland on Wednesday, April 13, at the AAP in Pilar.
