The high goal season in the United Arab Emirates is coming to an end, with the last 20-goal tournament, the Ghantoot International Polo Championship, hosted by the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club, in Abu Dhabi. While Ghantoot was already in the final, they were awaiting the crucial clash between Habtoor and UAE to know their contenders.
Due to the holy Ramadan month, the club decided games to be played by night, under artificial lights. The two last league matches took place through Tuesday March 4 and Wednesday March 5. Tuesday saw Ghantoot and former reigning champions, Abu Dhabi, with the latter dominating the scores from the kick off. However, Ghantoot tried to bounce back, but at the end of the day, Abu Dhabi were victorious 8-6.
Habtoor and UAE met up on Wednesday, on a simple task – the winner would go through the final. Mohammed Al Habtoor’s linep had a stronger start, leading thoroghout three chukkas. However, UAE made an impressive comeback and went from a 4-9 to tie at 9-all, until they claimed the lead with the contest almost said and done. But the efforts didn’t pay off – Mohammed Al Habtoor picked the ball from Bautista Bayugar and produced the winning goal, that marked the 11-10 final score and the second ticket to the championship match.
GHANTOOT AND UAE ARE DUE TO PLAY THE FINAL OF THE GHANTOOT INTERNATIONAL POLO CHAMPIONSHIP ON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 8.
