After a two year absence, the legendary Coronation Cup is set to be back at Guards Polo Club. The international contest will see England and Uruguay, with the latter playing for the first time ever for the massive and historical trophy. The match is due on Saturday July 23 at 3,30pm and will certainly be the ice on the cake for a splendid day of international polo in England.
The Coronation Cup was first played in 1911, when the Roehampton Club presented the trophy to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King George V, the grandfather of the current monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A team representing India were the first winners, and up next was played for the winners of the Hurlingham Open, Ranelagh Open, Roehampton Open and the Inter-Regimental Tournament. This format remained until 1939; following the break caused by the Second World War, the Coronation Cup was back again in 1951. From 1971 onwards, the Coronation Cup has been an annual international match played between England and a variety of different invited countres and teams.
England will have a new captain, 7-goaler, James Harper, who confirmed that James Beim is standing down as captain, in an exclusive interview with PoloLine last February. Harper and Beim will be joined by Tomás Beresford and Louis Hine. With regards with Uruguay, the “charrúa” lineup won’t have their biggest star, 10-goaler David “Pelón” Stirling, who is recovering from an injury on his shoulder, that required surgery.
