The Queen’s Cup, one of the most prestigious polo tournaments in the world, resumed on Sunday with a match at Guards Polo Club. Eleven 22-goal teams are in competition. Emlor claimed its second win in the tournament after beating Les Lions 12-9. The final of the Queen’s Cup is scheduled for Sunday, June 17th.
EMLOR 12-9 LES LIONS (For The Richard Watt Cup, at The Queen’s Ground)
Both Emlor and Les Lions have already qualified for the next stage of the Cartier Queen’s Cup, but Spencer McCarthy, who fired through five goals this afternoon, wanted to make sure that his team finished well in League One’s ranking. He started his campaign in the first – the only member of Emlor to find the flags in this chukka – and went on to score in three further chukkas, including a pair of goals in the sixth. His sharp shooting was rewarded with the Richard Watt Cup, always played for on this Sunday of the Cartier Queen’s Cup tournament. Nacho Gonzalez, who has played with McCarthy for some 17 years, was also on form today, scoring a further three goals for his team. Diego Cavanagh, who had played yesterday when subbing for Adolfo Cambiaso in Valiente, looked fresh from that tough encounter and scored twice this afternoon, while Tincho Merlos added to the tally with a penalty in the fifth. Les Lions mostly relied on Joaquin Pittaluga’s accurate penalty taking – he fired through seven this afternoon – but it was not enough to change the outcome of this match.
Emlor: Spencer McCarthy 0 (5 goals), Diego Cavanagh 8 (2), Tincho Merlos 9 (2), Nacho González 5 (3). Total: 22.
Les Lions: Guillermo Terrera 8 (1 goal), Jaime García Huidobro 7, Joaquín Pittaluga 7 (8), Max Gottschalk 0. Total: 22.
Score Emlor: 1-1, 3-2, 5-3, 8-4, 10-6, 12-9.
