The Queen’s Cup, one of the most prestigious polo tournaments around the world, resumed its activity on Monday with one match. A total of 11 teams up to 22 goals are taking part of the competition. The current matchday featured a win by El Remanso over Clinova at The Queen’s Ground.
EL REMANSO 14-9 CLINOVA (at The Queen’s Ground)
Charlie Hanbury’s El Remanso team can relax a little tomorrow after securing their first league victory in the 2018 Queen’s Cup. They dominated Adrian Kirby’s Clinova, defeating them 14-9 in a match on The Queen’s Ground that, despite the score, was flowing and not interrupted by too many whistles.
Hanbury can take much of the credit for his team’s success today, scoring six of his team’s 14 goals. Although El Remanso’s hallmark has always been teamwork and this game was no exception. Not only did the team mark their opponents well -every time Juan Gris Zavaleta had the ball two El Remanso players were on him- every member of this all-English team, including Ollie Cudmore, James Beim and James Harper, found the flags too. Clinova had to rely on another Englishman, Malcolm Borwick, for the majority of their goals -he fired through four penalties and a field goal- but it was not enough to challenge El Remanso’s early lead. Charlie’s team were 8-4 up at half-time, giving them a comfortable cushion. Clinova made the most of their penalties to creep back into contention by the end of the fifth, but then failed to score at all in the sixth and final chukka, handing the win to El Remanso.
El Remanso: Charlie Hanbury 4 (6 goals), Ollie Cudmore 6 (2), James Beim 6 (3), James Harper 6 (3). Total: 22.
Clinova: Juan Gris Zavaleta 7 (1 goal), Nico Pieres 9 (3), Malcolm Borwick 6 (5), Adrian Kirby 0. Total: 22.
Score El Remanso: 2-1, 5-1, 8-4, 11-6, 12-9, 14-9.
Umpires: Jason Dixon and Tim Bown. Third man: Julian Appleby.
