Scone defeated Monterosso in a fantastic championship match played on ground 1 at the Jockey Club Open in San Isidro, on Saturday, September 24, to claim the 57th Jockey Club Open Thai Polo Cup. The Jockey Club Open Thai Polo Cup is one of the most significant tournaments of the Argentine season, and precedes the much anticipated Argentine Triple Crown. The tournament is hosted by Harald Link’s organization, Thai Polo, with the support of Minuto 7 Polo and the Argentine Association of Polo.
Monterosso got the upper hand in the first chukka, but from the second onwards, Scone seized the reins and came through with extraordinary team play from the three professionals. While Camilo Castagnola only produced three goals for David Paradice’s foursome, his brother, Barto, came through as the team’s flagship man, syncing perfectly with his cousin, Poroto Cambiaso, who ended up being the top scorer of the final, scoring 7 times. Monterosso attempted to close the gap, with Polito Pieres leading the action, but Scone replied quickly, widening their advantage to take a 11-7 lead by half time. Scone slowed down in the two last chukkas, but they still managed to take the 16-10 win to secure the title. For David Paradice, who, like Alessandro Bazzoni, played his first ever Jockey Club Open, it was his first big victory on Argentine soil. In addition, the the is the first time Jeta Castagnola and Poroto Cambiaso claimed the title, while the win meant that Barto Castagnola retained the title he won in 2021 with La Ensenada.
It is worth noting that, prior to the awards presentation, Delfín Uranga, President of the Argentine Association of Polo, presented Alessandro Bazzoni, David Paradice, Ernesto Gutierrez and Curtis Pilot, a piece of Palermo’s old Dorrego grands stand, as a commemorative object.
With that, the great Jockey Club Open Thai Polo Cup came to an end. It was delightful to see two of the most powerful organizations in the world provided perform in front of such a large number of spectators in the San Isidro based club on a perfectly sunny spring afternoon. It was undoubtedly, the best preview to the Argentine Triple Crown, which is due to start on Tuesday, September 27, with the Tortugas Open.
