Several prominent people within the polo world and guests of honour attended the opening of La Patrona International Polo School in San Pancho, Nayarit, Mexico.
The polo school seeks to reach the highest standards, and become one of the best academies for the sport in the world. La Patrona invited Ebe Sievwright, manager of Guards Polo Academy, to spend a weekend in this Pacific town, enjoying the five-star facilities of the La Patrona Polo Club. Sievwright had the chance to meet the protagonists and learn about their methods, values and mission.
- Can you tell us about your experience?
My experience has been amazing. About a year and a half ago I went to a promotional evening at Coworth Park for the Club [La Patrona], and remembered thinking, “;;This looks incredible”, but even that impression didn’t do the place justice. You drive through the jungle and you come out into this incredibly kept and creative place. Everyone has looked after me really well: Tomas Elliot, the manager, is doing a fantastic job here - he has developed a team of very loyal staff from scratch. He has taught them how to look after the horses, groom, and now play, referee and some are even beginning to teach. Sebastian Dawnay is also here, directing the International Polo School, collaborating with Tomas and doing a great job at it. Everything really is state-of-the-art here: the stables, the veterinary hospital, and both hospitality buildings. It is a great achievement.
- Is there anything you would like to highlight?
I’m particularly impressed by the CEO Daniel Peyret and his objectives; this is not just polo, or just a place for equestrian sports, but lots of different initiatives; from sustainable gardening to forestry, ecological incentives, involvement of the local community and in particular social integration with the town of San Pancho, the little utopian community next to the club: everybody is happy, friendly and creative. It's a really unique destination for people to visit.
- Do you envision some type of collaboration between Guards Polo Academy and La Patrona?
I’m here representing Guards Polo Academy, but this is a very informal visit - more of an introduction and a look around. I’ll be going back and reporting that this really is a destination that meets all the standards of excellence one would expect when delivering a product worthy of Guards Polo Academy affiliation. I can only speak for myself now, but I certainly would want to be involved with this club in the future.
